Biography/History: Fred W. Todd (1936-2011), a professional librarian from San Antonio, Texas, was a collector of Tennessee Williams materials, and the creator of the Fred W. Todd Tennessee Williams Collection (MSS 562) at the Williams Research Center of The Historic New Orleans Collection.
Scope and Content: This extensive collection was amassed over long period by collector Fred W. Todd, and includes a diverse assemblage of books, unpublished manuscripts, playbills, correspondence, photographs, theater & film memorabilia, books, journals, recordings, and other materials relating to the life and work of playwright Tennessee Williams. At the time of its acquisition by The Historic New Orleans Collection it was the largest accumulation of Tennessee Williams related material in private hands.
The original Todd Collection, acquired in 2001, is arranged in 24 series according to material type, and individual items are numbered consecutively from 1-3760. The original collection is extremely diverse in terms of materials and formats, and includes original manuscripts, correspondence, rare publications, photographs, and memorabilia.
Mr. Todd continued to enlarge and develop this collection prior to his passing in 2011, and subsequent additions are arranged according to date of acquisition. Again, the material is diverse and includes original manuscripts as well as rare publications, photographs, and correspondence.
Arrangement: The original Todd collection of 2001 is organized into 24 series as follows: 1. Periodicals; 2. Playbills; 3. Manuscript Poetry; 4. Manuscript Short Stories and Novels; 5. Manuscript Plays and Screenplays; 6. Manuscript Non-Fiction; 7. Correspondence; 8. Financial and Legal Documents; 9. Play Scripts and Screenplays; 10. Gary Tucker Papers; 11. Claire Luce Papers; 12. Liebling-Wood Glass Menagerie Clipping File; 13. Theater Photographs; 14. Theater Posters; 15. Vivien Leigh's Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone Photograph Album; 16. Vivien Leigh's Streetcar Named Desire Photograph Album; 17. Filmstills; 18. Lobby Cards; 19. Cinema Posters; 20. Pressbooks; 21. Photographs; 22. Music/Recordings; 23. Miscellany; and 24. Published Plays. Item arrangement varies within each series. The whole follows Mr. Todd's original order.
Series 25 contains additions to the Todd Collection made during Mr. Todd's lifetime, in consultation with him. Within this series, materials are arranged in 41 sub-series, generally according to order of acquisition. Arrangement within each sub-series varies by group, but is often chronological.
Series 26 contains additions to the collection made after Mr. Todd's death in 2011, arranged by sub-series in order of aquisition.
