Biography/History: Pierre Laffite (1770-1821) was the older brother and business partner of pirate and smuggler Jean Laffite.
Jean Laffite (ca. 1780-1826) was a smuggler and pirate active in Barataria Bay and Gulf of Mexico from ca. 1807 until 1814.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of three items concerning the Laffite brothers and their privateering activities. The first is an unsigned request for a French letter of marque and reprisal for the Laffite-owned and commanded brig "Diligente." The second item is a certificate of inspection at New Orleans for a Lafitte-connected vessel, done as part of the application process with the French consul at New Orleans. The last item lists the armaments and crew of the "Diligente," listing guns, small arms, and the name, rank, age, and birthplace of each crew member. The forms were printed for the French consulate and feature the coat of arms of Napoleonic France.
