Biography/History: Jimmy Maxwell (b. 1953) is a musician and band leader in New Orleans. His orchestra has performed for carnival balls and other social events in New Orleans and elsewhere since 1981.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of papers compiled by Jimmy Maxwell, band leader of the Jimmy Maxell Orchestra. The papers are organized into four series based on the person or organization primarily associated with them.
Series I: Ed Maxwell papers is primarily associated with drummer Edward James Maxwell, Jr., the father of Jimmy Maxwell. Ed Maxwell performed in the René Louapre Society Orchestra for many years in the mid-20th century. In 1981 he began performing in his son's orchestra. The Ed Maxwell papers consist of 24 diaries containing musical gig information (f. 1-24), 13 photographic prints of musicians and performances, 2 copies of the 45 rpm recording of "I Have a Dream," performed by the Ed Maxwell Ensemble (f. 32), an article about René Louapre, inscribed by Louapre to Maxwell (f. 28), and Ed Maxwell's life membership card in Musicians Mutual Protective Union Local 174-496 (f. 34). Ed Maxwell's diaries include information about music gig dates, times, venues, kinds of event (such as carnival balls, carnival organization supper dances, other kinds of social events, rehearsals), and amounts of money paid to Maxwell. Diaries are present for every year from 1957 through 1982, except for 1960 and 1981. The photographic prints include five pictures of Ed Maxwell and other musicians riding on His Majesty's Bandwagon float in the Rex parade in 1977 (f. 33).
Series II: Jimmy Maxwell Orchestra papers consist of photographic prints of musicians, promotional brochures and other promotional papers, three magazines with articles about Jimmy Maxwell and his orchestra (f. 46, 49, and 50), a menu and a carnival ball program from the Rex Organization from 2010 (f. 51-52), and a letter thanking Jimmy Maxwell for a performance for President George Bush and Barbara Bush (f. 55).
Series III: Maxwell's Toulouse Cabaret papers consist of promotional materials and ephemera associated with the jazz venue operated by Jimmy Maxwell and other members of the Maxwell family at 615 Toulouse Street in New Orleans in the 1990s (f. 57-64).
Series IV: Other musical projects papers consist of materials associated with Jimmy Maxwell or Ed Maxwell and their performing with groups other than the Jimmy Maxwell Orchestra. Papers include promotional materials and admission tickets for events associated with the Louis Armstrong Society Jazz Band and their 2004 production of "A Salute to Satchmo!" (f. 65-68), and promotional brochures about Jimmy Maxwell's performing with the Basin Street Hot Shots in 2004 for the Rowan County Concert Association in Rowan County, North Carolina (f. 69-70).
