Scope and Content: The archive of the Germania No. 46 Free Masons Lodge includes administrative records of the organization (membership petition books, registers, visitor books, receipt books, and meeting minutes), as well as volumes from its library, which was an important resource for its membership. Founded in 1844, the Germania Lodge was one of New Orleans’ first German organizations, and is the oldest surviving social organization in the City with a German history. German ethnicity or language ability, however, are no longer membership requirements. Also included in this collection is material from the Friends of Harmony Free Masons Lodge, which was incorporated into the Germania Lodge after 1957.
Arrangement: The collection is arranged in twelve series, as follows: I: Library (Boxes 1-4); II: Bibles/Prayer books (Boxes 5-7); III: Bound Newspapers/Magazines (Boxes 8-10); IV: Petition Books (Gesuche) (Box 11); V: Registers (Box 12-14); VI: Visitor Books (Box 15); VII: Receipt Books VIII: Minute Books; IX: Loose Miscellanies (Box 16); X: Additional Materials (Boxes 17 - 18); XI: Annual Returns to Grand Lodge/Member Lists (Box 19); and XII: Friends of Harmony Lodge (Boxes 20-21).
