Biography/History: Leah Chase (1923-2019) was the co-owner and chef of Dooky Chase's Restaurant in New Orleans's Tremé neighborhood. An author and television personality, she was known as the Queen of Creole Cuisine, advocating both African-American art and Creole cooking. She was also an advocate for her community. In the 1960s, Dooky Chase’s Restaurant was one of the only public places in New Orleans where mixed race groups could meet to discuss strategy for the local Civil Rights movement.
Scope and Content: Leah Chase was interviewed by Mark Cave for the Vieux Carré Memoir Oral History Project on June 4, 2015. She discussed the French Quarter, her life working in restaurants, and opening Dooky Chase's Restaurant. Also included in this series are an audio segment produced by WWNO from the interview; 71 photographs taken of Dooky Chase's Restaurant, and a video segment which combines the WWNO audio with photographs.
