Biography/History: The Boswell Museum of Music was located in East Springfield, NY. It housed a collection of furnishings, clothing, magazines, newspapers, photographs, records, films, sheet music and radio memorabilia, all pertaining to music, particularly the popular American music, jazz, and social history of the 1920s and 1930s when the Boswell Sisters were at their peak popularity. The museum closed and transferred its collection pertaining to the Boswell Sisters to The Historic New Orleans Collection.
Scope and Content: This collection consists of material collected by the Boswell Museum of Music formerly located in East Springfield, New York. Part of the historic material, such as photographs, phonograph records, sheet music, scrapbooks, correspondence or contracts, was inherited from the Boswell Sisters' family. There are a few three-dimensional objects in the collection, including clothing and a 1932 trophy presented to the Boswell Sisters in 1932. Some of the historic material may, however, have been collected or purchased by the museum.
Also present in the collection are many notes, press clippings, posters, books, and recorded music. Reproductions of photographs and other document used for research or exhibition purposes appear to have been created by the museum staff.
Arrangement: The collection is arranged in nine parts, as follows: Series I: Photographs (folders 1-140); Series II: Papers (folders 141-?); Series III: Scrapbooks; Series IV: Sheet Music; Series V: Books; Series VI: Recorded Music; Series VII: Multimedia Material; Series VIII: Exhibition and Research Materials; and Series IX: Realia.
Three-dimensional objects in Series IX: Realia are stored separately.
