Scope and Content: This extensive collection of original documents, rare publications, images, and artifacts was gathered over a period of forty years by private collector William C. Cook of Nashville; it was the largest collection of such materials in private hands prior to its acquisition by THNOC. Mr. Cook's collection focuses on the War of 1812 in the South, particularly the Creek War, the war in the Gulf of Mexico, and the Battle of New Orleans. Major General Andrew Jackson, military commander during these events, is well represented, and the collection also includes various important U.S. Army and militia documents, as well as materials concerning the participation of the southern Indian tribes and manuscripts from the British perspective. Also present are related materials concerning the War of 1812 in the South from a later date, the largest single grouping of which contains campaign materials from the 1828 presidential election, particularly a collection of the infamous "Coffin broadsides" that vilified Jackson for the 1815 execution of the six Tennessee militia men in Mobile.
The nearly 600 volumes comprising Mr. Cook's research library are inventoried and stored separately. Individual titles can be found via MINT online. The library includes rare books and pamphlets published from ca. 1800 to ca. 2006. There are government reports, military manuals and histories, travel accounts, memoirs, scholarly monographs, reference works, and printed ephemera relating to the war and related subjects. Topics include American political history ca. 1800-1820; Anglo-American diplomacy and military policy; Indian ethnohistory of the American Southeast; military genealogy; early histories of the Mississippi and Alabama territories; and maritime history of the Gulf South.
The last series in the Cook collection consists of souvenir postcards printed between ca. 1900 and ca. 1995 showing sites in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes, Louisiana, that are associated with the Battle of New Orleans and Andrew Jackson.
Arrangement: The original collection, acquired by THNOC in 2001, was arranged in eight series, devised by Mr. Cook, as follows: SERIES 1 - Pre-War and Early Events in the War of 1812; SERIES II - Defense of the Lower Country; SERIES III - The Creek War; SERIES IV - The Gulf Campaign and the Battle of New Orleans; SERIES V - The Aftermath of the War of 1812 in the South; SERIES VI - Coffin Broadsides; SERIES VII - Clark Mill's Equestrian Statue of General Andrew Jackson; and SERIES VIII - Pamphlets and Newspapers. The arrangement within these series is generally chronological.
Since the original acquisition, the collection has grown and now includes these additional series: SERIES IX - Additions, SERIES X - The William C. Cook War of 1812 in the South Library, and SERIES XI - Postcards. Items in SERIES IX - Additions are arranged in order of their acquisition.
The books and pamphlets in SERIES X are arranged in LC classification order.
