Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave, originally published in 1853 and recently celebrated as an Academy Award-winning film, is one of the best-documented slave narratives from the antebellum period. On display here are an advertisement for James Birch, the Washington, DC, trader who created and forced a new identity--Platt Hamilton--on Northup before selling him south; an 1844 city directory listing for trader Theophilus Freeman, Birch's New Orleans partner; the notarized act of sale of Harry, Platt (Solomon Northup), and Dradey (Eliza) to William Ford; and John Pamplin Waddill's journal entry recording the date he took on Solomon Northup's freedom suit.
