Biography/History: Mary Morrison, née Mary Elizabeth Meek (1911-1999), was a French Quarter preservationist and author; she was the wife of attorney and preservationist Jacob Morrison.
Jake Morrison (1905-1974) was an attorney and preservationist, and the brother of Delesseps "Chep" Morrison. He was the author of Historic Preservation Law (1957), the first book dealing with historic preservation legislation in the United States.
Scope and Content: The Morrison Papers come from Mary and Jacob Morrison, longtime French Quarter preservation and community activists. A major portion of the materials relates to historic preservation in New Orleans, though there is abundant material concerning municipal and state politics, especially with regard to deLesseps "Chep" Morrison, Sam Jones, and Hale Boggs. Other materials of interest include Jacob Morrison's wartime journals and law practice correspondence, and materials concerning the Meek family of Canton, Mississippi. The earliest documents in the collection date to 1883 and the most recent are from 1998. The bulk of the collection is from the early 1940s through the late 1970s.
Arrangement: The papers are organized into seven series: Series I. Preservation & Community Activism (boxes 1-89); Series II. Jacob Morrison Papers (boxes 90-136); Series III. Social Organizations (boxes 137-147); Series IV. Family Histories & Genealogy Research (boxes 148-163); Series V. Travels (boxes 164-171); Series VI. Miscellaneous Personal Papers (boxes 172-192); Series VII. Miscellaneous & Published Materials (oversize boxes 1-13).
