Biography/History: William E. Borah (1937-2017) was a lawyer in New Orleans active in matters of historic preservation and land use.
Scope and Content: This collection contains the papers of New Orleans land-use attorney and preservationist William E. Borah. Borah's activism is documented in letters, printed matter, and a wealth of newspaper clippings. Most of the causes represented here are focused on real estate development and transportation in downtown New Orleans and its riverfront. Among these causes are the Riverfront Transit Coalition's fight for a Riverfront Streetcar; developments resulting from the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, especially in the Warehouse District; opposition to a land-based casino, particularly the Grand Palais planned by Christopher Hemmeter's Celebration Park Casino, Inc.; advocacy of a Canal Street Historic District; "The Second Battle of New Orleans"--Borah's battle against the proposed Riverfront Expressway through the Vieux Carré; and opposition to the destruction of the Sanlin Buildings on Canal Street to make way for a Marriott hotel. A very few national causes, such as Disney's America theme park in Virginia, are briefly mentioned, mostly in clippings.
Arrangement: The William Borah Papers (Series I) are basically in original order. The only change made by the processor was to place items within each of the 17 sub-series (originally large accordion folders) or sub-sub-series (originally smaller manila folders) in chronological order. File names were also kept as sub-series and sub-sub-series names; in the case of missing file labels, a name was supplied by the processor, indicated by square brackets.
