Biography/History: American jazz teacher and multi-instrumentalist, based in Algiers (New Orleans west bank).
Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This interview with Manuel Manetta was conducted on July 8, 1959 by Bill Russell and Ralph Collins. Manetta discusses several musicians he knew from the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, including pianists Bertha Gonsoulin and Gussie Neal. He recalls his 1913 trip to Chicago, explaining that during his stay he learned to play the drums with Manzie Campbell. He discusses the personal and professional strengths and weaknesses of several musicians he knew and worked with in New Orleans. He recalls musicians that performed at the Dreamland Café in Chicago and the Frenchman Saloon in New Orleans.
