Biography/History: Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This series consists of the items Russell set aside for a planned book about Bunk Johnson. Materials include photographs, clippings, tickets, advertising fliers, programs, correspondence and other papers, music manuscripts and Russell's own notes. Photographic subjects include Johnson and his wife Maude Johnson, members of his band, Russell's friends and fellow jazz fans, and Louis Armstrong. There is also a group of photographs from ca. 1900, of varied subjects. Tickets, fliers and programs are from performances by Johnson's New Orleans Band and by Art Hodes and His Blue Note Jazz Band. Correspondents include Squire Gersh, Dr. Leonard V. Bechet, Hoyte D. Kline, two marble and granite works in New Iberia, La. (about a memorial for Johnson's grave) and Paul A. Larson, whose letters include a chronology of Johnson's life. Also in this series are drafts of letters from Russell to Johnson. Clippings include obituaries of Johnson and articles about him from Australian journals. Russell's notes are about Johnson, Nellie Lutcher, Joe Keyes, Russell's trips to New Orleans in the 1940s, and the families of Bunk Johnson and Alphonse Picou. Other items of interest are a music manuscript in Russell's hand of "I Aint' Gonna Study War No More" and transcripts of talking records made by Johnson.
Arrangement: Original order.
