Biography/History: Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This recording was created on October 23, 1970 and includes an oral history interview with Frank Amacker conducted by Bill Russell. Amacker discusses his time spent working in the Storyville District of New Orleans. Amacker recalls the Easter Massacre which resulted in the murder of Billy Phillips. He also details observing the murder of Clerk Wade by Lillie Smith at the Big 25. He recalls working with Jelly Roll Morton, detailing the style, talent, and personal habits of Morton. Amacker also discusses other musicians he worked with and knew from his days in the Storyville District including Tony Jackson, Albert Calle, Manuel Manetta, and Clarence Williams. Russell comments on his first meeting with Morton and the two men discuss the recent funeral of Jenny Manetta.
