Biography/History: Louis Keppard (1888-1986) was an New Orleans jazz guitarist and tuba player. He was the brother of Freddie Keppard.
Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: Louis Keppard was interviewed by William Russell and Charlie Devore on August 4, 1957. Keppard details his own musical career and that of his brother Freddie Keppard. He explained that he began playing the guitar and switched to the cornet after having lessons with Manuel Perez and Hippolyte Charles. He recalls that his brother Freddie started with the mandolin, switched to the violin, and began playing the cornet. Keppard describes the composition of his own bands the Magnolia and the Cherry Blossom, as well as many other Storyville era New Orleans bands. He describes in great detail performing with a touring band that included Roy Palmer, Sugar Johnny, Lawrence Duhe, and Herbert Lindsay. He discusses the musical style of Bunk Johnson whom he compares and contrasts with Arnold Metoyer.
