Biography/History: Chester Zardis (1900-1990) was a jazz bassist in New Orleans.
Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This sound recording includes an interview with Chester Zardis conducted by Bill Russell on an undetermined date. Ralph Collins is also present during the interview. Zardis recalls his time spent working with Buddy Petit. He discusses the musical style and personality of Billy Marrero, from whom he took music lessons. He recalls his time spent working in the band at the Palace Theatre during the vaudeville era. He recalls musical performances at Milneburg picnics. He discusses his childhood and conflicts that led to him being placed in the Jones Home. He recalls working at Tom Anderson's in the Storyville district of New Orleans. He details his time spent working a day job at the Saint Bernard Market. He recalls a number of the musicians he worked with including Johnny St. Cyr, Kid Rena, Chris Kelly, and Dave Perkins. He recalls working on excursion boats, and an incident in which the boat he was preforming on, the Susquehanna caught fire.
