Biography/History: George Clarence Brunies (1902-1974) was a well-known early New Orleans jazz trombonist.
Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This recording was created by Bill Russell on November 14, 1971 and includes an oral history interview with George Brunies, also present is the youngest son of Richard Brunies. The interview focuses on Brunies memories of recordings that he and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings made with Jelly Roll Morton. Brunies recalls that a segregated hotel would not admit Jelly Roll Morton on the recording date. He comments on the talent of several musicians including Roy Palmer and Jack Mayhew. He recalls that he snuck into the Storyville district of New Orleans as a child, and was later able to find work performing in the Bucktown neighborhood. He also recalls his childhood in the Irish Channel neighborhood.
