Born Russell William Wagner, Bill Russell (1905-1992) was an American music historian, collector, musician, and modernist composer. He was an authority on early New Orleans-style jazz, and the founder of American Music Records.
Scope and Content: This recording was created by Bill Russell on January 24, 1970 and includes an oral history interview with Joseph "Fan" Bourgeau. Bourgeau recalls meeting Jelly Roll Morton in the early 1900s, explaining that Morton patronized the Orleans Pleasure Club where Bourgeau worked as a runner. He recalls being inspired to learn to play the piano watching Morton, and the guitar watching Johnny St. Cyr. He comments on the physical appearance and musical style of Jelly Roll Morton. He details his memories of the Storyville district, recalling several of the musicians he knew there and sharing his memories of the Big 25 club. Bourgeau explains that he worked in manufacturing plants before serving in World War I, where he was stationed in France and served as a translator.
