Arsène Lacarrière Latour (1778-1837) was a French-born engineer, soldier and historian. He was the author of "Historical Memoirs of the War in West Florida and Louisiana," published in 1816.
|Scope and Content:||
Major Arsène Lacarrière Latour served as Andrew Jackson's chief military engineer during the Battle of New Orleans. Soon after the crisis, Latour wrote his Historical Memoir of the War in West Florida and Louisiana in 1814-1815, published in Philadelphia in 1816. Rather than base his history on secondary sources, Latour interviewed his fellow officers, sometimes via mailed questionaires, and sought documentation from other sources, including Secretary of State James Monroe. Latour's papers include portions of his original manuscript, with Latour's own annotations, as well as material that may have been received too late to be included in his book. Also included are letters and documents pertaining to the Battle of New Orleans, as well as the process of writing the book and the initial response of readers. Of particular interest are the copy letters of James Monroe to the governors of Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee, and correspondence pertaining to General David B. Morgan's command on the West Bank of the Mississippi River.
The Latour archive is divided into nine series, with thematic groupings of documents.
