Biography/History: Samuel "Sam" Menszer (b. 1923) worked as an engineer, real estate developer, and operator of his family's Gretna, Louisiana department store.
Mark Cave is the curator of manuscripts and oral historian for The Historic New Orleans Collection.
The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to preserving the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The institution was founded in 1966 by General L. Kemper Williams and Leila Moore Williams -- collectors of Louisiana materials who wished to share their holdings with the public.
Scope and Content: Samuel R. Menszer spoke to Mark Cave on September 12, 2011 for the last of sixteen interviews conducted for the New Orleans Life Story Project. The conversation includes a general discussion of the Howard Johnson sniper incident and the crash of Eastern Air Lines Flight 304. Menszer describes in great detail the artwork of his wife, Elaine Menszer. He broadly discusses a variety of entertainment venues including Pontchartrain Beach and Norma Wallace's brothel, as well as various French Quarter restaurants and Bourbon Street nightclubs.
